Through God’s Eyes
When we are in a successful partnership, there is mutual trust, mutual caring, and mutual interest in the growth and maintenance of the partnership.
Partners make decisions together. They respect each other’s point of view, and they honor each other’s choices. Partners are close, but separate. They respect each other’s space, but also jump in and help when needed.
They do not caretake (defined as assuming responsibility for the physical or emotional needs of another who they perceive as incapable of self care). They respect the sentience and the personhood of each other.
Whether our partnerships are friendships, marriages, or work-related partnerships, we need to remember to see each other with God’s eyes rather than our own eyes. Through God’s eyes, we look at our partner’s best self, we do not focus on his or her faults. We raise each other up rather than tearing each other down.
We rejoice in being with each other rather than dreading to be in each other’s company. Through God’s eyes we see time together as a precious blessing, a treat to be savored, a time for wholeness.
Through God’s eyes, we look upon our partners with trust in their ability to function as our partners. We rely on them to be there for us.
We learn to see each other as God see each of us. May the God of love add a blessing to these humble words. AMEN © 2011 Rev. S. Suzanne Fisher |
